Old Man Winter, Signing Out

Well Wisconsin, it’s been quite a season.  From early December when I sent you white gold a-plenty to the snow days last month, I’ve had a great time. And I’m glad you’ve been with me through it all, too. Now don’t worry, Old Man Winter isn’t goin’ soft on ya. It wouldn’t work if I tried; my tears would just freeze.

BUT I will say that Wisconsin is simply the best place to be in winter and I sure will miss ya.

So I’m packing up my long Johns, grabbin’ my best friend, Colby and hittin’ the jet streams to head south.

‘Til next year Wisconsin,
Old Man Winter

P.S. I gotta say, I’m really into this whole blog thing. Wonder if the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel needs any writers in the off season?

St. Patrick’s Day in Wisconsin

Well folks, it’s getting to be that time of year again… the time that I dread each March, when my Wisconsin visit begins to grow short. I can already feel it in the air…spring that is. And you know what that means: allergies, rain, yard work, and what-it-seems-like a never-ending lag of winter sports. *Sigh*

I do, however, have a few more stops before I pack up the ole cape and snowboard, like the Irishman’s Walk in Plymouth, WI – a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day complete with a parade! I will say the thought of seeing green makes me feel… well, a little queasy, but it should be a great time!

Melting…emotionally,
Old Man Winter

World Ice Fishing Championship

I’m stoked for this weekend. The World Ice Fishing Championship opens up in Rhinelander, with teams from across the globe competing through the ice.  Fisherman will tackle the icy waters of Boom Lake to see who takes home the big catch. It’s no wonder that the World Ice Fishing Championship chose Wisconsin too. The state has more than 15,000 lakes with winter snow conditions to boot. But then again, winter is what I do.

Hope I can lure you onto the ice,
Old Man Winter

Wisconsin Polar Plunge

I stopped by the Milwaukee’s Polar Plunge at Bradford Beach this morning. What a way to support a local charity…the Special Olympics that is! Brought my dog, Colby too. It was great watchin’ all those people run into the chilly water of Lake Michigan and then, verrrry quickly run out. What a crop of winter-lovin’ folks!

I suggest all you “polar bears” go and grab a nice cup of coffee or hot apple cider at nearby Alterra Coffee by the Lake.

Glad we can still call it winter around here,
Old Man Winter

Night On The Town

Life is good in Wisconsin, I tell ya.  Nowhere else on the planet do I get this kind of treatment– not Antarctica, Argentina, or New Zealand.  When I plan a night on the town in Wisconsin everyone I meet is friendly and fun to be around. Some of my regular spots are: Legend Larry’s in Manitowoc, Angler’s Bar and Grill in Hayward, and the Rum Line Bar in Bayfield and the Avenue Bar and Grille in Marinette. But where I go out really depends where I’m at – I do a lot of traveling around Wisconsin, if you didn’t know…

Yep, I think I’ll stay a while,
Old Man Winter
